In January 2015 the ABNA committee submitted a consolidated response from its membership to the NHMRC public consultation for the draft Principles for accessing and using Publicly funded data for health research (the draft Guide).

Consultation on this work revealed an increasingly contemporary view that data held by Australain Government Agencies are a National asset that can be increased in value by boroader use to benefit the health of Australians. Such benefits included research driven innovations in clinical practice, new ideas for health service delivery, and innovative public health policy.

The Principles were developed to help data custodians realise the above benefits by providing a framework of consideration to better improve how data is accessed and used.

We have just had notification from the NHMRC that the ‘Principles for accessing and using publicly funded data for health research (The Principles) has now been released.
